 Crisis Hotlines and Resources

  • A mobile response team is a group of mental health professionals who are dispatched to respond to individuals in crisis at their location, rather than requiring them to go to a hospital or clinic. These teams typically include crisis counselors, social workers, or paramedics, and they provide immediate support, de-escalation, and stabilization in situations involving mental health emergencies. Their goal is to help individuals manage the crisis safely and connect them with ongoing care if needed.

The primary goal of a Mobile Response Team (MRT) is to lessen trauma for an individual in crisis, divert from emergency departments or criminal justice, and prevent unnecessary psychiatric hospitalizations. Beyond working to resolve the crisis situation, the team also works with the individual and their family to identify and create strategies for effectively dealing with possible future crisis and rapid follow-up after the initial contact.

    Reasons to call a MRT

    • Feelings of hoplessness and helplessness

    • Thoughts of suicide or recent attempt

    • Evidence of self-harming behavior

    • Severe anxiety or panic attacks

    • Experiencing hallucinations or other symptoms that interfere with daily life

  • The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has put together a Guide on Navigating a Mental Health Crisis.

“NAMI developed this guide to support people experiencing mental health crises, their friends and families by providing important, sometimes lifesaving information. This guide outlines what can contribute to a crisis, warning signs that a crisis is emerging, strategies to help de-escalate a crisis and resources that may be available for those affected. Also included is information about advocating for a person in crisis along with a sample crisis plan.”
